rejected page from SuperF*ckers #279

The fourth issue of SuperF*ckers (#279) almost turned out completely differently than the version you know and love.   The first page I drew, I had Omnizod (née Percy) returning to earth:

Then I changed my mind and decided it wasn’t yet time for a return.  As you can see, this version of Omnizod is very different than the one that ended up in the actual issue, instead of a floating flaming skull, it’s Percy’s tattered body with a glowing orb of energy where his head should be.  The flaming skull is way better.  Also in this page is my favorite SuperF*cker, Computer Fist… who ended up not being in the issue at all.  In the previously published issue, he was kicked off the team and I was going to draw him hanging around waiting to be let back in.  It’s funny, ’cause the story could go in a million different directions, my head is swarming with buzzing ideas for directions to take the story in, so many that I’m never quite sure exactly what is going to happen.

Eli Draws Bone

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

The other night I was reading the second volume of Jeff Smith’s BONE series as a bedtime story to my son Eli (age 4). Eli decided that he wanted to do a drawing of Bone and send it to Jeff. It was pretty late at this point, maybe 9:00 at night so he was deliriously sleepy, and he was trying really hard to copy one of the drawings from the book exactly. He worked really hard on it and kept messing up until he was practically in tears. Finally, he did a version which he decided was successful.

So I emailed the drawing to Jeff and also to Steve Hamaker who colors the Bone series for Jeff. Steve very graciously colored Eli’s Bone drawing in his signature style and emailed it back. It’s pretty incredible to see Eli’s little drawing with colors beautifully rendered by a true professional. Check it out in Monster Attack, here.

Steve has got to be the nicest colorist in comics.  What a champ to do this for my little boy!
