Our Alien Overlords
Friday, November 20th, 2009I have 161 little paintings up at Giant Robot in San Francisco, and they’re all for sale online. They’re the perfect Christmas gift for the most awesome people you know.
Here’s the back-story about the paintings:
The Wealthy Alien Overlords are the royal beings secretly in control of the world’s financial markets. Their favorite way to show off their wealth and status is to pose their Royal Kittens in elaborate costumes and have their portraits painted. The Battle Cats don robotic battle suits to fight the Wealthy Alien Overlords and save the kittens from their oppressors.
The aliens heads can detach from their bodies and fly through space and warp through time. The cats have been observing and learning…the paintings of cats poking their heads through the rippling abstractions are examples of cats riding space & time wiggles.
I own two cats… Spandy is 15 years old and Nooko is about 3 months old. They were a big inspiration for these paintings and the story behind them. The design of the aliens is inspired by my many years playing Space Invaders, Galaxians and Galaga, and their story is inspired by the collapse of the world financial systems that we are currently facing.
There’s also a bunch of “extra” paintings in the show, that have nothing to do with this back-story.
Here’s a video shot at the Giant Robot show. And here’s a mini-documentary shot partly in my home and partly at my concurrent show in Montreal at the Monastiraki Gallery.
