Today is the 10th Anniversary of American Elf. On Oct 26, 1998 I began the daily diary comic strip, and it utterly transformed my life. I’ve reached a level of synergy where my life is my art and my art is my life. And even when life is bad, when things aren’t going well, if the strip is good then my life is good too, in a way. That’s what makes the experience of drawing this thing so transformative. Life is amazing… the lows and the highs, it’s all really an incredible experience… and my diary strip reflects it with it’s own lows and highs. It’s not that my life so amazingly special, but my life is made amazingly special by the strip. And still it stays mundane. It’s almost a paradox, the mundane is made fantastic and the fantastic is revealed as mundane. It’s like paradox and synergy combined in one, or something. Yeah, I’m rambling. Happy American Elf!
Each day for the next week or two, I’m going to post a tribute to American Elf drawn by one of my cartoonist pals. First up, the great Tony Millionaire.
